Fabulous Friday: Wedding Dress Code Explained

We know that wedding attire can be interpreted differently, so we’ve put together a cheat sheet to help your guests out!

White Tie: This is as formal as it gets; black tuxedo with satin stripe for guys, and formal evening gown (long gloves are optional) for the ladies, no exceptions.

Black Tie: This means a formal dress code and is usually an evening affair, i.e. tuxedo, formal floor length gown, or a chic, dressy cocktail dress paired with heels.

Black Tie Optional: Black tie is still acceptable, but something slightly less formal is also appropriate, i.e. dressy separates or pants suit, or a formal cocktail length dress. For men, they have the option of wearing a tuxedo or a formal dark suit.

Semi-Formal: Depending on the time of year, try out lighter colors and fabrics for a summer wedding, or a darker flowy dress for a winter wedding. Floor length gowns would be inappropriate for this dress code.

Casual: This usually implies a more laid back attire and in an outdoor setting. Unless specifically noted, jeans, shorts, and tank tops are probably not appropriate. Go for a sundress with wedges for the ladies and a button down polo with khakis or dress pants for the guys.

Beach Wedding: Shorts and flip flops are acceptable!

Rule of thumb for weddings: “It’s always better to overdress than under dress!”
